In our efforts to lead a purposefully simplified life we continue to downsize the amount of “stuff” in our home. I have set aside some boxes for Goodwill and/or Salvation Army both wonderful organizations. I have a separate area for items I intend to donate in a more intentional way.
Think outside of the donation box by:
- Donating wedding dress to brides against breast cancer. org
- Furniture, appliances, hardware, plumbing supplies, home decor, building materials to Habitat for Humanity ReStore.
- Call the Activity Directors at local Nursing Homes to see if the facility would like magazines, books, craft and hobby supplies, or if there are any residents in need of anything (like a lamp, magnifying glass, etc.). The activities department often supplies residents with items they might need for a favorite hobby ie. puzzles, knitting, word jumbles, wood carving, etc.
- Worn or stained clothes, towels, sheets, and pillow cases can be used for rags, of course, but we all know that we don’t need hundreds of rags either. Humane Society and animal shelters would benefit from these. Or talk to the Therapy department in Nursing Homes and Rehab Facilities. Occupational therapists work with patients to regain function in their daily activities. After asking if these items are needed you could bring stained or worn baby and adult clothes or even an old laundry basket into a Nursing Homes therapy department. They have the patients fold, sort, hang up, and put away the items as part of their functional activity tasks. The Nursing Home residents really enjoy the memories it brings them to fold those adorable baby clothes. They may also need pill dividers, small hand weights, puzzles, empty pill bottles, or anything that can allow therapists to test patients daily activity skills.
- Gently used stuffed animals to SAFE.
- Toiletries including sample sizes to Women’s and Homeless Shelters.
Let’s get together to each donate items this
week to at least one new place/ person that
we’ve never donated to before. You might
just start a new tradition or better yet you
might be a blessing to someone else.
Acts 35:(NAS)
”In everything I showed you that by working hard in this manner you must help the weak and remember the word of the Lord Jesus, That He Himself said ” It is more blessed to give than to receive.”
Do you have any unique donation ideas? I would love to hear about them. Thanks!
